Wedding Shower Games

Friday, February 29th, 2008

While a wedding ceremony is a solemn affair, a wedding shower is the place to let your hair down and have all the fun you can. Wedding showers have always been around, but now they are also in vogue. They are a separate and totally fun event; a place where the bride, groom and the guests can open up and have loads of fun.

The maid of honor, the best man, close friends, or family of the bride and groom usually organize wedding showers. A lot of planning goes into organizing the event like selecting a theme, food and drink, and loads of fun games.

Whoever said games are just for kids? Games are for everyone and all events and a wedding shower is no exception. The entire shower becomes a fun and memorable event, thanks to a number of games. It falls on the head of the person planning the wedding shower to think of new, innovative and fun games to keep the crowd entertained. It becomes more of a task if the crowd is a mixed one, so as not to offend anyone??s sensibilities. However, if the person planning the shower does their research properly, the shower will become a hit and be remembered for years to come.

Tips On Choosing Wedding Shower Games

Know your Audience ?” Before planning games, it is important to know the people who will be attending the shower. If they are people unknown to each other, games would be a good idea to get them to break the ice and interact, but if they are already known to each other, a totally different set of games needs to be introduced. In the first case, it would be a good idea to have easy going games, whereas in the second instance, it would be ok to have games of a more personal nature.

Games Are Not Always Necessary ?” Just because games are available as an option is no reason to force them on a wedding shower. Sometimes, people would like to have a more personal evening, talking and reminiscing with each other, in which case, games would be more of a hindrance and something to get over and done with. This would be a worst case scenario ?” forcing people to play games when no one really wants to and would spoil the mood of the shower. So, it is important to know when to include games and when to let them be.

Do Not Offend ?” While it is ok to have personal games (only if you know your audience well enough), it is also important to know when and where to draw the line. Do not go overboard in trying to have a good time; do not offend anyone??s personal, religious, or sentimental sensibilities. That is sure to dampen the spirit of the wedding shower.

Lastly, choose interactive games, but remember the stars of the occasion are the bride and groom and everyone should get a chance to interact and mingle with them.

A Money Making Discount Card for Fundraising

Friday, February 29th, 2008

The fundraising discount card is a great way to raise money for your organization and support your community.

Benefits of the Card

Fundraising discount cards are extremely popular fundraising tools. Your average fundraising discount card includes several different local discounts. You might have a 50 percent off discount for a Mexican restaurant, a discount to a florist and a discount to a local gym on the same card.

The cards are usually wallet-size and they’re made of plastic so they look like a credit card. Before you order the cards, you need to find local businesses that want to support your group by offering discounts to the customers who buy the card.

Asking a business to support your fundraising effort is easier than asking them to just give you something. This is because with the discount card, they also see benefits. For starters, they get a little piece of free advertising. They submit you a company logo, which is placed on the card next to their listed discount. Secondly, they are guaranteed to have more traffic in their business. When people buy these cards, they buy them to use them. So, a family may end up going to a restaurant they wouldn’t normally go to just because they have a meal discount.

Before you ask companies to donate, you need to set some kind of card expiration date. Businesses are much more hesitant to donate if they know the discount will be good forever. A year time limit is usually fair.

These fundraising discount cards are also great because they have very low overhead costs. They’re made of plastic so they’re very cheap to produce and they can be sold for about $10 a piece. Depending on how many cards you sell and which company you go with, you can get an 80 to 90 percent profit margin on these cards.

Different Types of Cards

You can create a fundraising discount card that includes general discounts, or you can create cards that have specific discounts. For example, you could put together a pizza discount card that only pertains to a certain pizza merchant. It’s usually good to ask the business to put a couple of different discounts on the car so the consumer can have a choice.

Another idea is a shopping discount card. Go to your local mall and collect discounts from several stores in the mall. Put together your card based on these centralized discounts. That way the card buyer doesn’t have to drive all over town to get their discounts.

The advantage to having themed fundraising discount cards is that people can buy cards that are more specific to their needs. Some people will never use a discount to a florist, but they might use a pizza fundraising discount card every Friday night.

More Ideas to Motivate Reluctant Writers

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

In my previous article on motivating a student who dislikes writing, I talked about my experiences with my son and how we overcame his dislike of writing through his interest in writing product and book reviews at Amazon.com and dreaming up writing ideas that combined his love of drawing and sketching with writing assignments.

Some other ideas we have used which were also fun and effective (the teacher learns what’s effective after the fact, but fun was always the essential element in the beginning) included the following:

In teaching basic writing, once the idea of parts of speech were taught and understood, we found two highly effective and enjoyable methods of mastering the knowledge of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc. and, from there, learning to write better sentences. The Mad-Libs pads of crazy stories with blanks to be filled in for various parts of speech are found in most bookstores. Our family had many evenings full of laughter with one of us asking for words that filled the criteria of being certain parts of speech and then reading back the silly stories which resulted from those suggested words. Boys of a certain age seem to really get a certain pleasure out of using gory adjectives and somewhat violent verbs, but you can set the rules in advance. Sometimes, so the stories wouldn’t end up so outlandish, the reader who was asking for the parts of speech would narrow down the topics on which words could be offered so that the resulting stories actually made some kind of weird sense. For encouraging creativity, after you’ve bought your first Mad-Libs book, you can save the money and have you or your children write your own stories with blanks and ask for the appropriate parts of speech.

The second method, once parts of speech are totally mastered, is to simply create a basic subject-verb sentence, such as “A dog ran” and then, step by step, have your child add an adjective, then an adverb, then a prepositional phrase, in order to learn how more complex sentences are built and how detail makes a sentence more interesting. This is a major step in becoming a better writer. It is also a lot more fun than diagramming sentences. If you do one of these “build more complex sentences” activities each day with a different subject and verb, your child will become a masterful sentence composer in very little time.

Once your child is proficient in writing complex sentences, you will find that he or she still may not like to write a requested paragraph or essay on a specific assigned topic. Especially if the child is a visual learner, I have found it to be more effective to give him a picture…an old photograph, a scene from a wall calendar, a page from a magazine…and ask him to write either about what he sees or to make up a story about what is happening in the picture.

As I wrote in my previous article, the main thing is to find out what appeals to your specific child and run with it until his comfort level with writing improves to the point that he is ready to write on an assigned topic not of his choice. But first, like me, you will probably have to endure a lot of stories about aliens, other planets, strange creatures, and bizarre situations. However, if your student kept the pen to the paper, enjoyed the process, and is proud of his final product, you are on the way to changing writing reluctance into writing pleasure.

Fall Fashion Tips for Him

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

This year’s fashion trends for men are following the same path as last year with a few new twists. Preppy is still in but don’t pull out your old high school cardigan. The styles have been smartened up a bit. Argyle sweaters are back again this year along with cardigans and sweater vests. Pair them with suits, sports jackets or a pea coat. The western look is also in but don’t overdo it. This is still the east coast.

The season’s male fashions continue with paisley, checks, plaids and even florals for men’s button down shirts. Pair these with black chinos (yes it says black not khaki) or grey jeans (the new in color for men

And speaking of color, dark reds, black, navy and purple in addition to grey are making the scene for men this fall. If you aren’t brave enough to wear a purple shirt, then try it in accessories like a tie. Grey is back in a big way in the grey suit. Pinstripes are still going strong but grey flannel suits are in with a vengeance.

The other “in” fabric this season is velvet even for men, but if that is a little too over the top for you, then stick with corduroy.

No matter what you do for fall fashion, be comfortable, be yourself and look good!

Taking Care of the Cellulite Problem

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

If you have a cellulite problem then you know that there is very little that you would not do to take care of it. This of course means that a person will have to develop a plan that is suitable for the cellulite reduction with exercise, diet and a good cellulite cream. There is little more that you can do other than the very expensive medical treatments that can leave you scarred and broke to say the least. So it will take some planning to ease the cellulite problem but that is completely normal and may be something that requires you to find the time in your day for some new things. Cellulite reduction with exercise has proven to be very effective to say the least, but there are very few people who actually stick to the plans that are set down and they end up with more of a cellulite problem then they started with. This is something that you do not want to happen to you for any reason. People are finding that the cellulite problem that they have is much more stubborn then they believed it to be and they have taken the last recourse that they thought possible. This is of course going to see the doctor who tells them that there is no magic pill that he or she can prescribe so go on a diet. This can be very hard on a person to say the least and it is at this point that they realize that they are on their own to take care of the cellulite problem. Cellulite reduction with one of the many medical procedures is not the answer to say the least. You need to formulate a home based plan that you can live with each and every day.

The bulk of the people that have a cellulite problem also have a weight problem though that is not a hard and fast rule. This means that the person could actually benefit in more than one way from the cellulite reduction with exercise, diet and cellulite creams more than someone without a weight problem. When you start to lose the weight that you have put on you will notice that you start to feel better. The better that you feel the more energy that you will have and so on. When the energy that you have reaches a good point you will know that you are at the point when you are helping the body with the fight against cellulite.

Childhood Obesity

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Childhood obesity is a term that refers to those children and adolescents between the ages of 6 ?”17 whose body weights are more than 25% fat for boys and 32% fat for girls. Childhood obesity is reaching epidemic proportions, and if something is not done, children will continue to be more unhealthy and unhappy.

Obesity in children can lead to a whole host of health problems, many which are not often seen until late adulthood. These include:

  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Heart Disease
  • Asthma
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Greater risk for injury for muscle and bone injury

Obesity can also have a profound effect on children and adolescents emotionally as well. Children and adolescents might be teased by their peers, be left out of team sports because of their perceived inability to play, and become depressed because of the lack of clothing available for larger sizes. This can lead to depression, and even binge eating as a means of coping.

There are a number of factors that contribute to childhood obesity, many of which can be altered with simple lifestyle changes within the family. These include:

  • Lack of exercise or regular physical play
  • Excessive TV watching, video game playing, or computer usage, which encourages a sedentary lifestyle
  • Eating too many high fat, high calorie foods
  • Genetics

With the exception of genetics, much can be done to turn around the problem of childhood obesity. Much of it starts within the family, and with the parents. Setting a good example is critical to having children who grow up knowing how to make wise food and fitness choices. Some of the things that parents can do include:

  • Spend time doing physical activities as a family: take walks together, ride bikes together, play games in the backyard
  • Have the kids do chores around the house that require physical exertion, including vacuuming, mowing the lawn, sweeping, and washing the car
  • Give your kids the opportunity to participate in sports or other organized physical activities, either at school or in the community, including soccer, swimming, gymnastics, and karate
  • Limit the amount of time the kids watch TV every day
  • Eat meals together regularly, and have the kids help prepare them
  • Limit, or eliminate altogether, fast food stops & Junk foods
  • Reduce the portion sizes at meals and at snack time
  • Avoid buying processed snack items that are high in calories and fat like cookies; opt for fresh fruits, yogurts, or whole grain crackers and bagels
  • Make sure the kids get fruits, vegetables, and whole grains daily
  • Don??t eliminate treats like cookies or cake entirely; teach moderation, and kids are less likely to overindulge on sweets

By setting an example and encouraging a healthy diet and regular physical activity, kids can avoid the trap of childhood obesity. They will be more active, more energetic, happier, and healthier. And they will be learning habits that will take them from adolescence into adulthood, where they will be able to make smart food and exercise decisions.

Over The Top Fund Raising Event

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Many organizations are having to find ways of raising extra money for needed programs or events. Many of these programs are being shorted on money mainly due to cut backs. Schools are one of the prime targets for lack of funding and many churches are having to raise extra money for worth while events. You will find that a fund raising event can be a lot of work, but the effort put into it is well worth the final result. There are many ways of raising money and you can actually be as creative as you would like to be. The fact is the more outlandish the idea is, the more money you will probably raise. This article will give some outlandish over the top ideas on a fund raising event.

A fund raising event doesn’t require that you be like everyone else with calendar, magazine and cookie sales. Although those are great ways of making extra funds, there are so many different ways to be outlandishly different. You don’t have to have a car wash or bake sale either. You can come up with things that will attract a large crowd and bring in many people at one time rather than do something that will be spread out over a period of time with a deadline on the event. You could also add an extra measure to your event by requiring the crowd to bring a can of food as they enter to be given to the food pantry or such along with your fund raising event.

You can have a fund raising event that will include some local town officials or maybe even some local celebrities if you have any. These type of people are often more than willing to help out for a good cause. They will usually benefit from the local publicity of such an event and it will give them an opportunity to get to know the local people. You can come up with all kinds of events that will bring in a large crowd if you use local influential people. You could do something such as offering a hayride at night and include some singing with it for a fee of course. Your local talent can help out here. You might even want to hold a barn dance with a buggy ride included or extra. If you live in the city, these are especially different fun things that don’t occur everyday as a fund raising event.

Any fund raising event that uses important well known local people will attract a lot of publicity so often you can get much of the advertising done for free. Remember that many of the local businesses will often support financially or donate to worthy causes such as a good fund raising event. This way, many if not all of your needed items can be virtually free or of little cost so most of what you bring in will be profit. Make your fund raising event new and over the top.

Texas Women Can Achieve And Maintain Health Step By Step

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Staying healthy in this modern world might seem like a full time job in itself, but there are steps, especially for women, that can be taken to make the challenge at least manageable.

For women in Texas, and especially those living in the cities of Dallas, Houston and Austin, achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be broken down into manageable steps taken on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis.

On a daily basis, one of the key issues those concerned with health can take is what they eat. Consuming foods that are rich in fruits and vegetables is known to reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases, notably because fruits and vegetables provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and other substances that are important for good health. Most fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories, and they are filling. By looking at what’s in season, you can add variety to your choices of fruits and vegetables. Supplement the eating of fruits and vegetables with lots of water. At the same time, those concerned with health should cut down on the amount of salt, sugar, alcohol, and saturated fat they consume.

As far as snacking is concerned, choosing those that are nutritious and filling is another smart choice. Another daily choice for women seeking a healthier lifestyle is to focus on weight, specifically with a view to losing or maintaining weight through a balanced diet. Along with the choices already mentioned, portion control can be an effective way to manage weight.

Regular physical activity is also a way to substantially reduce the risk of dying of coronary heart disease, the nation’s leading cause of death. Exercise can also decrease the risk for stroke, colon cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure. It also helps control weight; contributes to healthy bones, muscles, and joints; reduces falls among older adults; helps to relieve the pain of arthritis; reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression; and is associated with fewer hospitalizations, physician visits, and medications. Physical activity need not be strenuous to be beneficial; people of all ages can benefit from participating in regular, moderate-intensity physical activity, such as 30 minutes of brisk walking five or more times a week.

A key strategy for improving and maintaining health can be to quit smoking. People who quit smoking will generally live longer and live better. Quitting will lower a person’s chance of having a heart attack, stroke, or cancer. If you are pregnant, quitting smoking will improve your chances of having a healthy baby. The health benefits of quitting smoking extend to the people you live with, especially children in the home, who won’t be exposed to smoke and will be healthier as a result. There is also an economic benefits of not spending the money on tobacco products, but rather on savings or investing.

A healthier lifestyle can also be achieved by focusing on stress. Job stress in particular has become a common and costly problem in the American workplace, and few workers are untouched. While short-lived or infrequent times of stress pose little risk, when those stressful situations go unresolved, there is an increased rate of wear and tear to body systems. The result is fatigue or damage to the body??s ability to repair and defend itself becoming seriously compromised. When that happens, the risk of injury or disease escalates. There is evidence to suggest that stress plays an important role in several types of chronic health problems- especially cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, and psychological disorders.

Other changes that women can make to their lifestyle will also improve their overall health. These include assessing and managing the amount of behavior known to be risky, such as being in a car without wearing a seat belt, or working in a job where personal protective equipment should be used but isn’t.

Enjoy the sun? Sun block will reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Is there a history of diabetes, heart disease or cancer in the family? Being aware of the risk is a first step in looking for ways to reduce those risks.

On a weekly and monthly basis, women concerned with their health should keep track of the daily steps they are taking to improve their health, marking their progress along the way. If progress isn’t as consistent as you want, start again and keep going, knowing that not every step or new routine is going to work for you.

For women, a monthly breast self-exam is an important routine to get into in establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Early detection of any possible problems is always a smart move.

On an annual basis, routine exams and screenings should be done, as should any appropriate vaccinations recommended by a physician.

Achieving and maintaining a person’s health requires determination, planning and perseverance.

Come Dancing

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Have you been tripping yourself up lately? You know - falling over your own feet? Were your going in the wrong direction, blinded by a lack of self-awareness? Or trying too hard for all the wrong reasons?

Then you stumbled - maybe it was your health or someone you let down or just an important part your life that fell away when you weren??t looking. Maybe you missed an opportunity when your head was down?

What do you need to do to start enjoying life? What do you need to do to dance in the moment? Maybe like all the great dancers, you need to lift your head and find your poise. Look around you, take in your surroundings. Relax, follow your own free style and open your mind to the music.

When was the last time you lived in the moment, aware of your surroundings - the people, the scenery and the ambience? When was the last time you had time to listen or time to look or time to feel. Or is life passing you by so quickly that you don??t have time to enjoy what really matters?

Have you cornered yourself? Is the rigidity and inflexibility of where you are preventing you from dancing with life? You know that feeling you have when you go on vacation - that feeling of being open to new surroundings and of being in the moment. That??s the feeling you need to nurture right here, right now.

Don??t wait for your next break to capture it. Today is a chance to dance. Kick off your shoes and find your soul. If today was the last dance, what would you do to make the best of it?

Are you dancing with life or straining against it?

Choosing a Shop Vac for Your Small Business

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Shop Vacuum Testing is time consuming for the small business person and even more problematic is there are so many to choose from. Most retailers will not allow you to test them in the store before purchasing, but if you pick the wrong one you will be sorry.

After testing the off the shelf shop vacuums available to the public, we have some recommendations. If you are to buy a shop vac off the shelf from a major retailer rather buying an industrial shop vac such as a quiet and powerful Karcher or WAP, then these are the results you need to know. First we tested many things. Suction of sawdust from a five-gallon bucket. Sucking up steel washers of different sizes, Sucking up water from a five gallon bucket and then we measured the decibels while doing so. We tested the Craftsman 5.5 Hp-16 gallon vacuum. The Genie 6.0 hp vacuum with 16 gallons. The Ridgid vacuum 6.0 hp and the Shop-Vac six hp 16-gallon shop vacuum.

Here are the results. The vacuuming of wood chips was won by the Shop-Vac Vacuum, which took only 11.4 seconds. Second was the Ridgid at 12.4 seconds. Last the Craftsman at 14.1 seconds. For the water test the winner was the Genie with the five gallon bucket of water gone in 7.3 seconds, Craftsman second at 9.4 and the Ridgid and Shop-Vac tied for last at 9.6 seconds to empty the five gallon bucket of water. The noise factor is of importance too. The decibel rating for Shop Vac was lowest at 81 dB at a five-foot distance. The Craftsman was at 86 dB and the Ridgid was 88 dB. Last and noisiest was the Genie with 90 dB. We think the Genie was worst due to the high pitch of the motor while under higher demands for suction. But it did suck the water fastest while making this noise. It won the water-sucking test.

We might also recommend the Muffler, which is available through Craftsman or Ridgid as an accessory. With a little Teflon tape it can be made to fit both the Genie and the Shop Vac without any loss of suction. It is a simple baffle system, which breaks up the airflow and quiets the noise and high-pitched shrill sounds. It will lower the vacuums by 5-7 decibels. If you stick it into the exhaust port of your vacuum for a blower, it will work and costs $10.00.

You can order it from the Kmart-Sears Catalog or buy the ridgid model off the shelf at a Home Depot. Another great attachment to be added to your arsenal is the rain gutter attachment for about $7.00, which is also made available through Craftsman or Ridgid. It is a molded piece of bended plastic able to help you clean rain gutters. Here are the web sites we found to help you learn more about Shop Vacs;

Shop-Vac QSP PRO, http://www.shop-vac.com

It requires approximately 6 amps of you 36 amp generator during run time and spike is 12 amps and a full power. Phone number is 1-570-326-3557, average retail costs are between $78.00-99.00, available in yellow with black top.

Ridgid WD-1660 with blower, http://www.ridgidwoodworking.com

It needs 6.25 amps to run and spike peak is 12 amps. The price is about $129.00 but we have seen them on sale occasionally for $99.00 at Home Depot a couple of times per year. The color is gray and red top, does not come in yellow. 1-800-474-3443. It has a twenty-foot cord which is good.

Craftsman 113.177370 Usually sells for $99.00 sometimes higher but seems to be perpetually on sale. Demands 5.5 amps to run and spikes at 11.4 as per the manual, but we got it to 13.8 amps sucking water. Also realize that Craftsman filed bankruptcy, but the good news is that they are still operating and Craftsman has a 1 year warranty and if bought on the Sears card you can get a 3 year add on warranty for $15.00, we recommend this. 1-800-377-7414. Available in Red and black top only. Most popular and longest made brand of shop vacuums.

Genie PRO 600Q. 6 amps running, 12 at peak.

http://www.geniecompany.com 1-800-354-3643.

Comes in yellow with black top. Usually prices under $100.00, Normally on sale at $89.00 and off sale is about $95.00 at Home depot, Target, Loews, Home depot and Wal*Mart.

After all these tests our research has concluded that due to color of unit, noise, and performance of all four of these top selling shop vacuums, we like the Shop-Vac Model, with the attachments for the muffler at Home Depot from Ridgid wrapped with three layers of one inch wide Teflon tape and stuck into the exhaust of the vacuum to quiet it a little.

Here are some other reasons for picking this unit over the others; Genie was too loud for use at office parks near customers, but we liked the color. Craftsman was good but we felt that the color red and the noise were an issue and also the lid falls off too easy when trying to move it around, we did not like the latches or the cradle used to maneuver it, it took up too much space in the shop. Ridgid has a yucky color and the same large cradle as the Craftsman. We liked the blower idea, but not powerful enough for blowing water off cars and no real attachment available for blowing out door jams. So that feature is not needed and probably the reason for the higher price.

Shop-Vac has a ridge on the inside of the bucket so to empty you have to completely turn the vac upside down, which was a pain. But in the end the quietness and fit ability of the Ridgid attachment to make it even quieter put us down to 75 Decibels, which is more than acceptable in office parks. Enough to let people know you are there, but not enough to be bothersome or interfere with their phone calls, conferences, meetings or conversations.

Also you can communicate with your employees while working as long as you are up to 10 feet from it. Also nice is when we stuck a 30 foot pool hose up to it, the Shop-Vac was still able to get adequate suction to pick up the water from a floor mat which was pressure washed to remove stains to make it dry. Other good things which we feel would increase longevity to these units was the fact that Shop-Vac had an option of filter Bags, and Dry Pick-up Cartridges either one or two stage pleated and a foam filter for picking up water or a filter cover over option. Like wise most of these had Drum Liners

Consumer reports had an article in their magazine, which rated the unit high but gave the winning seal of approval to Craftsman. Other reports have been divided. Now realize that we do prefer the WAP, Blue bucket, black top unit to these off the shelf units and they are much quieter by 25 decibels or more. The WAP with a thirty-foot vacuum hose draws much better air flow than any of these and is about 20% more powerful. It uses the same amps more or less. If you need one of these WAPs Call 1-480-517-1925 ask for Jason and ask for your Ezine Discount and they will ship one out to you.
