I can still hear the sound of red-winged blackbirds singing as i pulled my rusty old wagon down the path to the woods. When I got to my crabapple tree I would unpack my wagon… a ragged blanket to cover the thistles, three or four of my best pals (dolls and teddies), a stack of books, and a plastic jug of Kool-Aid. And then I was set for the afternoon. I could talk and pretend with my dolls until it was time to pack up the wagon and head home for supper.

That was really summer. With a loose schedule, those days were my time. In a recent FAMILY IMPACT survey, children from ages 4 to 15 were asked, What would you like to do this summer? The overwhelming response was, PLAY! Not one child requested more lessons, or structured time. It is also surprising that less than 5% mentioned any kind of a major trip or outing. Over and over what the children want to do is play: play with friends, ride bike, shoot hoops, fly a kite, go swimming, etc.

We are so fortunate to live in a culture which offers a wide variety of classes, camps, and lessons for children. These are generally terrific programs where children learn new skills, make new friends, and gain confidence. The difficult thing for us, as parents, is to make choices, and be sure to include as one of our primary activities, down time.

Down time is for just playing, hanging-out, dreaming, imagining, tinkering, and thinking. It is during this time that kids think of new ideas, as well as figure out things about themselves and their abilities. Fields must lie fallow for certain periods, and so must children. Down time results in richer development later on.

Here are a few of my favorite down time memories:

- Dandelion stems curling in cold water.
- Pictures drawn in the dirt with a stick.
- A tent made from a rope tied between 2 trees and an old blanket.
- Hopscotch.

My advice is to first do a new car search with the lowest costs online and only after that take the word of a car dealer.

Conducting a research always pays off. Just take the time to do it. After all, all you want is to find the perfect vehicle for you but not break the bank in the process.

Long before The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson directed another cinematic masterpiece, Braveheart. Insistent on not sharing his wife (a proclamation by the king gives local rulers “first-night rights” to new brides) Wallace secretly marries Murron. But Murron is captured and executed by the king’s emissaries.

Angered by his wife’s murder, Wallace instigates a local rebellion, slaughtering all the king’s loyalists in his village. As his rebellion grows, a distraught Longshanks (Patrick McGoohan) dispatches his fabled Northern Army to destroy it. But the heroic Wallace delivers a stirring speech to rouse his men, while deploying an ingenious battlefield trick to defeat the king’s cavalry.

With the power and legend of Wallace growing day by day, Longshanks relies on his daughter-in-law, Princess Isabelle (Sophie Marceau) to broker a truce. Passing the CompTIA Network+ certification exam and going on to become a subnetting expert is mastering the basics of IP addressing, and that means knowing the different classes, their default masks, and what these masks mean. Let’s get started!

Part of every IP address indicates the network the host is part of, and the other part identifies that particular host. You need to be able to look at an IP address and determine the network and host portions, and you do that by determining the class of the address.

Many books list only three network classes, but there are five. Since you shouldn’t assign an address from the last two classes to a host, you better know what they are!

Class A networks have a beginning octet of 1 - 126.

Class B networks have a beginning octet of 128-191.

Class C networks have a beginning octet of 192 - 223.

Notice a number missing? 127 is the reserved first octet for loopback addresses, such as the 127.0.0.1 address assigned to a PC.

Class D networks are reserved for multicasting. Class D addresses begin with an octet in the 224 - 239 range.

Class E networks are reserved for experimental use , and the first octet of these addresses is 240 - 255. Those addresses are reserved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Neither Class D nor Class E networks should be assigned to host devices. For exam and real-world purposes, the entire address range 224.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.255 are unacceptable for assignment to network hosts, as is any address beginning with 127.

Now, what does all this have to do with identifying the network and host portions of an address? Classes A, B, and C all have different default network masks, and it’s that mask that tells you which part of an address is the network portion and which part is the host portion.

Class A’s default mask is 255.0.0.0, or /8

Class B’s default mask is 255.255.0.0, or /16

Class C’s default mask is 255.255.255.0, or /24.

Even if you were already familiar with these default masks, you may be wondering what that /8 business is. This is another way to express a network mask. It’s called prefix notation, and it’s much less complicated than it sounds. The number behind the slash is simply the number of consecutive ones at the beginning of the mask when it’s expressed in binary.

255.0.0.0 in binary is 11111111 00000000 00000000 00000000.

255.255.0.0 in binary is 11111111 11111111 00000000 00000000.

255.255.255.0 in binary is 11111111 11111111 11111111 00000000.

When you see all the values in an octet set to 1, the value of the octet is 255. If you see an IP address with an octet set higher than 255, it’s invalid. ( 256.1.1.1 literally cannot happen, so it’s an invalid address.)

Prefix notation is the preferred way of expressing subnet masks. A mask of /8 is pronounced slash eight , which is a lot better than saying two-fifty-five zero zero zero . It also has less numbers to type, which I still believe is the real reason we use it! You might not see prefix notation on your Network+ exam, but since it’s so commonly used in network documentation, you need to know it.

Now, about those network and host portions…..

The Class A network mask 255.0.0.0 means the first octet of the address is the network portion, and the final three octets are the host portion.

The Class B network mask 255.255.0.0 means the first two octets of the address are the network portion, and the final two octets are the host portion.

The Class C network mask 255.255.255.0 means the first three octets of the address are the network portion, and the final octet is the host portion.

Identifying the network or host portion of a given IP address is a two-step process:

1. Determine the address class by examining the first octet

2. Use the network mask to determine the network and host portions

Let’s get a little practice with this. What is the network portion of the address 23.14.189.200?

1. The first octet falls into the Class A range

2. The network mask for Class A is 255.0.0.0, meaning that the first octet of the address is the network portion and the remaining three octets are the host portion

That’s really all there is to it. The first octet, 23 , is the network portion. The remaining octets, 14.189.200 , comprise the host portion.

I found myself having to catch a bus last week, the second week of the children’s school summer holiday. I was instructed to take my son to his Grandma’s house and with my wife having the car it left me with no choice but to do something that I hadn’t done for over twenty years - take the bus.

The 188 from Weymouth to Poole. I was to get on from the stop at the end of my road which wasn’t too far away from the town but a little too far to walk.

My son and I reached the stop ten minutes before aforementioned bus was due. Forty minutes later it still hadn’t turned up so I got on the number 92 which stated, Poole. On we jumped - I asked if he went all the way to Poole. No, he said, I don’t. Well it says “Poole” on the destination board, I stated. It says India on the tyres, he replied, but I’m buggered if I’m going there (Okay, the old ones are the best) - yes, of course I’m going to Poole. £1.35 for you, half fare for the boy.

It was just 14 pence the last time I went on a bus, shows how I’d lost touch.

I think I started to enjoy the ride more than my seven year old son, who always got excited during the odd bus trip, especially if it was an open top bus and he would be ‘allowed upstairs’.

Then my enjoyment started to fade as we had to actually stop to let some people get on. After using my own transport for so many years this was a nuisance. They fumbled with their change and took ages to sort out a ticket. The time, the time, what are they doing?

Off we went, when a kind driver eventually let us pull out. Ah yes the memories of busses was coming back to me.

I read the same few adverts over a few times and moved from a draughty vent. I couldn’t help but listen to a stupid conversation that some teenage girls were having in front of my new seat. Boyfriends, who’d have them, eh?

My boy was grinning from ear to ear, obviously enjoying seeing something from the bus window, everything seemed to please him but here was I getting totally fed up with the slow, noisy and frustrating bus ride into, Poole. Going to Grandma’s in the car took seven minutes but here on the bus, only half way there, had taken an hour already.

We stopped at a bus lay by but there weren’t any passengers to pick up, so why stop? Ah, yes, I remember now - the driver has to ‘do his books’. He clicked a number of coins from his cash dispenser and wrote a few notes in his book, messed about with some tickets and timetables and put the engine in gear. Not wanting to hurry, he wasn’t fussed that nobody would let him pull out onto the highway again, choosing to wait instead until there was a huge gap in the traffic before he even attempted to pull away.

Sadly, in Poole, we have a thing called a lifting bridge. It is for the boats in the harbour. The main road in and out of Poole is built over, Poole harbour, and the road has to lift up in order for shipping to go through to the other side of the lifting bridge. Now the bridge lifts up at certain times - called the ‘rush hour’ and ‘when anyone’s in a hurry to get to Poole’. It is the biggest black mark in the history of Poole. All traffic comes to a stand still once the lifting bridge is up and allowing the boats to sail through.

Judging by the queue of traffic that the bus joined after we left the last stop, we had hit such a time. Off goes the engine and silence falls on the neighbourhood - it’s quite eerie really and also bloody annoying.

Anyway, after around an hour (fifteen minutes actually but it felt longer) off we went again, very, very slowly as the bridge isn’t very wide and certain vehicles can only go through single file, meaning one driver has to wait for the other. If we are lucky it won’t go up again before we get our chance to cross to the other side.

It didn’t and the bus station, our destination, was getting nearer. But wait, the driver was turning off the main road and going a different way than I expected.

Oh yes, another ‘bus thing’, it may have to pick up passengers from that bus stop about two miles up that odd road that nobody ever goes along but ‘just in case’, buses must go that way. Nobody was at the stop - the driver waited there anyway (just to annoy people like me, of course) and then off we went again -.”Look daddy, a train is at the station”, be quiet, I replied.

The queue into the bus station was long as cars were in the bus lane, cars who’s drivers didn’t realise that the lane for the multi-storey car park was the other lane, not this one, this one was for buses.

At last we were at the bus station and parked up. Now, had we have caught the 188, or rather had it turned up, we would have been dropped outside of Grandma’s but, as this was the 92, it took us to the station and we had to catch another bus to go to a road near Grandma’s.

Stand by for Mr. Grumpy. Yes the 101 to Bournemouth was late. If a driver is late he is very grumpy and snaps at all passengers along the way - that’s if he actually stops to pick them up. Many ‘would be’ passengers are left stranded with their hand sticking out to stop the bus only to see it sail on by…in Poole that means you’ve got a late, grumpy driver.

After queuing for a while I stated where I’d like to go. Seventy two pence, the driver snapped. Why the odd two?, I thought. Anyway I thought it would be good to give him the correct change as they always seem to not be able to change a fifty pence coin if my memory served me correctly, so to cheer him up I placed some coins on his counter and looked in my pockets for the odd two pence coin. He tutted and groaned and looked at his watch in annoyance followed by a look over my shoulder at the queue. He tore off my ticket and told me that I should tear my own ticket off. I said, “well, the other driver tore it off for me”, but he didn’t seem to care. This was all new to me.

My son was getting fed up by now - all his playtime would be used up on the bus trips. Past the first two stops without stopping (I told you, didn’t I?) and picking up a few other passengers then on to our stop.

Off we jumped and walked the rest of the way to Grandma’s. Grandma was pleased to see us. My boy played with some toys and then we were invited to stay to tea. Mummy came to Grandma’s from work and we all had a lovely time…apart from the bus trip. I am having the car next week, no, I said, I AM having the car next week!

You are out with some friends, maybe at a great new lounge. On your way to the bar, you notice a woman with extra-special beauty laughing with her friends. She has that look of beauty that is rare, but is breathtaking. You want to meet her, but how?

It might surprise you to hear that the very attractive women out there are often the easiest to approach. Most women of great beauty are so intimidating to men, that the best a guy can do is pick his jaw up off the floor and keep walking. Truthfully, extraordinary beauty strikes the fear of God in many men.

So, if you want to learn how to approach and attract very beautiful women, the most important thing to remember is….relax.

A few years ago, I worked up the nerve to approach a very famous supermodel (who shall remain nameless). I was terrified upon approaching, but forced myself to do it because I knew it would help me build my confidence.

What surprised me was how open she was to having a conversation. She was friendly, humorous and engaging. The interaction ended when her thug-bodyguard ran me off…but I was so surprised how easy she was to talk to. Interesting, right?

What my friends and I realized later was that women of great beauty are rarely approached by men. The women hardest to meet are, in fact, those that are a bit below the supermodel level - call them an “8″ or a “9″ (rating scales are crude, so forgive me). They are less intimidating, and therefore more approachable by men.

They are the ones who will often throw tests at you as fast as a Roger Clemens fastball. Why? They have had to learn how to deal with men trying to pick them up a lot, and have developed an arsenal to defend themselves from guys only interested in their bodies.

However, the “10″s of the world are already so fearsome to men, that they tend to get off slightly easier. Of course, they have challenges in different ways, but for now I encourage you to go for it and approach them.

When (and if) you do, be sure not to fawn over their beauty or even remark that they are attractive. This will instantly blow it for you, as you become one of the many who are not able to get past their looks. Instead, ask her something like this:

“Excuse me - I need female input on a debate my friends and I are having - maybe you can help. In a relationship, what is more important to women - romance or adventure?”

Presto - ask her this and she won’t think you are talking to her because she is so gorgeous, but because she is nearby and female. Plus, it is an interesting topic - women love talking about relationships. From there, just engage her in playful conversation, and then lead her into a more personal conversation.

If you asked an extremely attractive woman what is it that most upsets her about her beauty, it would probably be that people see her as a hot body, rather than as a person.

So, remember - relax - and go for it. And when you do, be sure to talk to the person and not the body! Ask her questions, chit chat with her, tell her funny stories, probe her opinions on subjects. Be interested in what she is saying rather than her amazing figure.
